Elles demeuraient à TEKAHORA et se prénommaient Tei-poi-te-marama (Messagère de la lumière et de l’intelligence) et Tei-poi-te-here (Messagère de l’amour et de la sagesse). Un jour, les deux jeunes filles s’en allèrent pêcher à la ligne sur le récif de TEKAHORA. Apercevant un grand rocher au-delà du récif, elles nagèrent jusqu’à lui et s’y installèrent pour pêcher, face à l’océan. Elles étaient heureuses car les poissons mordaient facilement. Très vite, elles en attrapèrent tant et tant qu’elles décidèrent de regagner la terre ferme. Elles se levèrent et se tournèrent vers le rivage. On distinguait à peine le sable blanc de l’île. Nos deux jeunes filles réalisèrent alors qu’elles avaient dérivé. Once upon a time, on the island of GANAIA*, lived two very pretty girls. One day, both young girls went fishing by hook and line on the reef of TEKAHORA. As they sighted a big rock beyond the reef, they swam to it and sat down on top of it, facing the ocean. They were happy as the fish kept on biting greedily. Very quickly, they caught so many of them that they decided to return to the main land. They stood up and turned about towards the shore. The island white sand could hardly be seen. Our two young girls then realized they had been drifting away.
