MAUI - La capture du soleil - The trapping of the sun

10 Mäui observed his younger sister Hina. Her lips were swollen, she got thinner and thinner and her mouth was so inflamed that she could no longer swallow her food. Mäui was dissatisfied with the sun. He could not contain his anger any more; he could no longer stay without doing anything. Therefore he imagined the following plan: he would catch the sun with a snare and force him to slow down his movement across the sky so that men would be given more time to achieve their tasks. Mäui observait sa petite sœur Hina, ses lèvres étaient enflées, elle mai- grissait peu à peu et n’arrivait plus à avaler ses aliments tant sa bouche était enflammée. Mäui était très mécontent du soleil. Il ne pouvait plus contenir sa colère. Il ne pouvait plus rester sans rien faire. Il conçut alors le plan suivant : il attraperait le soleil avec un piège et le forcerait à ralentir sa course pour laisser aux hommes le temps d’ac- complir leur travail.
